FAQ

Is This Allowed?

We know that some companies explicitly encourage this behavior, and this is a practice that individuals have done and are doing. The employees that MSCHF has coordinated with have all volunteered to use their corporate matching programs for good. There are no legal or tax ramifications for anyone donating through the Venmo links on the main page of this site. We also performed a legal check with industry attorneys, who flagged no broad legal concerns.

Can these donations go to ANY organization?

No. There are two constraints on this method of donations matching:

  1. Each corporation has its own specific matching policy. Most will have a list of organizations that they will match donations toward, and these lists are limited. Typically, only registered 501(c)(3) non profits will qualify.
  2. Additionally, because we are coordinating with individual employees of these companies, some of our employee volunteers have requested specific organizations be prioritized. That being said, we have two large donation categories encompassing 14 organizations that range from justice reform, police accountability, protestor support, and community advocacy (to name a few).

The organizations listed on this website have been chosen because MSCHF is able to route money to them through matching programs, taking into account the above 2 constraints.

Why does each Venmo handle have multiple organizations associated with it?

Because each big company employee in our network has a donation matching limit, there is a chance that we might have more money donated to a single organization than we can successfully route and match through this method. We have tried to group organizations (and will divide donation dollars between them) so that we do not exceed our matching capacity: every dollar will still be doubled.

What companies have matching programs?

Many - and possibly ones you wouldn’t expect. Here is a compilation of some companies that have good matching programs.

How do I know that my donation gets to where it needs to go?

MSCHF will post screenshots of receipts from money donated through corporate matching programs on this page as they are made. However, given the nature of donation bundling we will not be able to provide a receipt for an individual payment made to the Venmo links on the front page. You will, however, be able to verify that the full monetary totals from each of the 2 donation categories have been donated successfully based on the bulk donation receipts.

Do all companies match at the same rate?

1:1 matching (meaning donations are doubled) is the most common, however some companies will even match at higher rates, 2:1 or even 3:1 - though this is unusual.

What are the tax ramifications of this?

Your donation via the Venmo links on this page is not tax deductible the way a charitable donation ordinarily would be. The money is, however, not taxed as income at any point in this flow, so the full dollar amount (x2) reaches the target organization. MSCHF itself receives no tax benefit from this flow either, either via write offs or otherwise.

What happens in the event that Donate 2X receives more money than we have employee matchers for?

In that unlikely event, MSCHF will do its best to match any additional donations out of its own funds, while also continuing to reach out to grow our donation matching army.

My company does donation matching! How can I help?

Sign up here We will reach out when we have additional need for employee matchers.

How long will it take for payments to reach the organizations?

We will do our best to get funds to these organizations in as timely a manner possible. That said, there are obvious time constraints with both money transfer and with the companies matching the donations.

How often will receipts be uploaded to the website?

We will upload receipts for these donations on a rolling basis.

How will Donate 2X make these charitable donations?

Payments will be made via whatever platform is most convenient for the employee volunteers helping us match payment and may vary.

What organizations will these donations go to?

Supporting the Community donations will go to the organizations on this list. Criminal Justice Reform and Police Accountability donations will go to the organizations on this list.
